What is the diiferance between Story Writer, scriptwriter and screenplay writer?

July 152010

I want to know that what is the roll of STORY, SCRIPT and SCREENPLAY witer in the film.

If I am reading your question correctly, you are asking about the difference in the credit the writer is given for the film.

Story By, Written By, Screenplay By

Those are the three, and while there are differences between the three, the main purpose behind the designation is for Writer’s Guild credits, and pay standards within the guild.

There are many variations of how these credits can appear in a film. Sometimes all three appear, other times a combination of sorts. And don’t even get me started on Television credits. Those go even deeper.

The manual, can be found here:

http://www.wga.org/content/subpage_writersresources.aspx?id=153

Policy found here:

http://www.wga.org/content/subpage_writersresources.aspx?id=171

And here is the verbatim cut and paste answer for your actual question:

It is appropriate to award a "Story by" credit when: 1) the story was written under employment under Guild jurisdiction; 2) the story was purchased by a signatory company from a professional writer, as defined in the Minimum Basic Agreement; or 3) when the screenplay is based upon a sequel story written under the Guild’s jurisdiction. If the story is based upon source material of a story nature, see "screen story" below.

A "Screenplay by" credit is appropriate when there is source material of a story nature (with or without a "Screen Story" credit) or when the writer(s) entitled to "Story by" credit is different than the writer(s) entitled to "Screenplay by" credit.

The term "Written by" is used when the writer(s) is entitled to both the "Story by" credit and the "Screenplay by" credit.

This credit shall not be granted where there is source material of a story nature. However, biographical, newspaper and other factual sources may not necessarily deprive the writer of such credit.

MEAT, ET. ALL:

So, your so-called screenwriters that "answered" your question are folks you should beware of when seeking answers on this forum. I am a member of the WGA, but for goodness sakes, if you cannot even research properly if you are pretending to be something you are not, go home.

Who is the youngest person to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay?

July 122010

I’ve heard that Ben Affleck was the youngest to win Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards, but who was the youngest to win Best Adapted Screenplay?

Thanks for reading. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’m not exactly sure, but I can think of some younger ones… like George Seaston was 36 when he won for Miracle on 34th Street (1947).

But my guess is the youngest was Paddy Chayefsky who adapted his teleplay Marty and won the Oscar when he was 32.

July 62010

so its like this, i love to write and i am almost finished writing my first screenplay, i have shown a basic plot of it to quit a few people, and they all loved it and wanted to hear more.
when i have finished writing it, i want to try sell it. its a good old Aussie film and i want to know what to do once i have finished ?
Do i look for an agent, produced, director and so on…
Please give me some advice!!!!!

Thanks,
Mitch.

Once you’ve finished your screenplay, register it through the wga at:

http://www.wgawregistry.org/webrss/

This will protect your work for five years.

Get a copy of the Hollywood Representation Directory, build a query letter, and start sending it to agents and managers that represent the genre that you’ve written. They are the ones that can get your script in front of the people who make decisions about what to buy and not buy.

And get used to rejection. It’s a fun business and easy to do if you’re dedicated.

Is it legal for a teen to submit a screenplay to a production company?

July 32010

If it is, would i have to get it copyrighted? And what production company would take a movie pitch from a teen? You see I’m really big on making movies, except I’m not 18 yet, but it would be sooo cool to make a movie at this age. I am interested in screenplay writing and directing, and in other things like producing and editing. My idols in the film industry include Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Quintin Tarantino and so on. Any suggestions?

You can submit it, but they won’t read it. Most major companies have policies on not accepting unsolicited scripts. They won’t even look at it to ensure you can’t sue them later for "stealing your idea."

Through networking (or an agent, although that’s trickier), you can get the word out that you’re a screenwriter with a product to sell. Then, once someone requests to see your script, you’re in.

That’s for the big entertainment field. You can do what a lot of people are doing now and try to break into independent film. You don’t have to be a big name, but again, networking will still be key.

How to contact a screenplay agent?

July 12010

I want to produce one of my screenplays. I plan on registery it with WGA as soon as I can. I can’t get contact information on any screenplay agents with out buying a book, or paying a lot of $ a month to join a website with their contact info. Does anyone know a Christian screenplay agent’s contact info? Someone who is a real agent, not a phony. I don’t want stupid answers.
Thank-you!

You named your only free source bud. The writers guild site lists all signatory agencies. Another, very unknown source, is everyonewhosanyone.com which will give you over 15k agency contacts. Go to the Tinseltown section, because he also provides literary agents for publishing.

When you get the money, you should invest in the Hollywood Creative and Representation directories, if you are serious about making this your career.

As far as finding an agent that represents ONLY Christian material, there are a few out there. If the material is good enough, and in market, it doesn’t really matter what it is about.

But religion has always been taboo in Hollywood. So be prepared for a lot of rejection.
