When writing a screenplay, is there a standard style guide that’s used?

June 292010

I’m just concerned with proper formatting. For instance, the MLA and APS are two style guides used in academia.

I’m just concerned with professional formatting. Not so much the craft of screenplay writing.

Yes, pretty much. I recommend that you check out some of the published book-formed scripts such as Napoleon Dynamite: Final Shooting Script or A Prairie Home Companion: Official Screenplay. I use these for my scripts. They are primarily the same form except they do have minor differences in form that really don’t amount to anything. But this is what I suggest as a fellow screenwriter.

Hey guys, I am new writer. I was deciding to write for disney series (Screenplay of course) but i am confused on how to write i mean how to start like the same for movies or some different way and when on submitting my screenplay I have to give whole screenplay at ones or in different episodes form. You need an idea and then you need to sell the idea to the company and then they decide whether or not they like it and while they decide you can’t sell the idea to any other company.

Any recommendations on how I can get my screenplay read by a Hollywood agent?

June 222010

I wrote a screenplay. I’m looking for suggestions on how to have my script read and evaluated by a Hollywood agent or anyone in the entertainment industry. I do not live in Hollywood and I do not know anyone in the business. Thank you.

First things first, before you market your screenplay, register it with the WGA and/or copyright it. (See www.wga.org and/or www.copyright.gov for how.)

Second, be sure you’re ready. Screenwriters’ first sales average out as their NINTH script; first scripts tend to be pretty bad, although the screenwriter doesn’t see it that way until s/he’s written several more.

It’s not unusual for an agent or production company to like your work but have no use for the script they’ve seen. You want to be able to say "Yes" when they ask, "Got anything like a romantic comedy, or a family movie?" It’s highle recommended that you have at least three highly polished screenplays in three genres before you start marketing yourself.

When you’re ready, you want to get the most recent HCD, the Hollywood Creative Directory, agents edition. Pore over it, determining which agents are seeking works similar to yours in genre and tone. Check their sales records online. (There are lots of scams and idea thefts.) Write a kick-azz one-page query letter "selling" your script. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Don’t sit back and wait for the big call or letter. Odds are it won’t come. Instead, get busy writing your next screenplay.

How much can I sell my well edited action screenplay for in Us dollars?

June 192010

Posted in screenplay | 1 Comment »

I need a price range. How much can I ask for? The story line is really good and the screenplay has been edited by a professional screenplay editor of New Line cinema.

How much did this editor charge you for this service?

Hire an agent to represent you. If the script is good, you’ll get money for it.

What is the difference between a screenplay and a novel or short story?

June 162010

I was wondering if someone who is writing a screenplay writes it in a way that is different from writing a story or novel. Are there any major differences?
Many thanks to all in advance.

You have much more freedom in writing short stories, novellas and novels. With these you can do pretty much anything as long as it’s with good spelling and grammar.

All established rules of writing screenplays, however, MUST be followed or it will be tossed aside by the person to whom you submitted it. There are some wonderful software programs which do all the formatting for you. I use Final Draft. These can be great ways of focusing more on your story and less on the potential (probable) frustration of double-checking and second-guessing your obeyance of format rules.

One thing that some forget with screenplays is that you cannot describe thoughts and feelings, unless they can be conveyed through a gesture or mannerism or facial expression.

The other answerers covered the differences very well.

Good luck to you. Screenplay writing can be loads of fun (even if frustrated fun).
