How can you tell if a child is really interested in a sport?
July 32010
My son will be 7 yrs old in a coupld of weeks, and he is playing Pee Wee Baseball. Tomarrow is his first game. He says he wants to play and all, but during practices, he goofs off and doesnt pay a whole lot of attention. I brought this to the coach’s attention, but he says its normal, he is young. What is your opinion on this? Is the coach right? Am I just too particular? I dont know….. Most of the other kids are paying attention or atleast seem to be. My boy ( i love so much ) but he puts his hands on top his head, dances around, and just goofs off…… How am I suppose to deal with this? I want him to be the best he can be, but I want it to be fun for him too.
I have 5 athletic boys. I was just looking at some old pictures the other day. My 12 year old in T-ball picking flowers in the field. My 13 year old playing tball with his hands down his pants and my goodness my 10 year old was so social on the tball field. We would have to yell run after each hit because he was socializing at each plate. My 8 year old use to sit down at each plate. My 12 and 13 year olds are die hard now of course and my 8 and 10 year old gave up baseball this year and want to just play soccer in the fall. Watch the other kids…you will see them do this to. It is very normal. Just keep continuing to tell him how important it is to pay attention to his coach and so that he does not get hurt. Don’t stress though he will eventually listen.

My 6 yr. old (will be 7 in July) just started Tee-Ball and he is the same way. Not all of the kids are as *bouncy* as he is, but a lot of the kids do goof around. The coaches don’t put any stress on it at this age, all the kids get a chance to hit, there’s no outs. They understand that at this age most kids don’t have the attention span to play the sport seriously and roll with it. My older two were the same way at this age and now they try their best and love the sport.
As long as your son is having as much fun as mine is than he’s interested! In a year or two if he loves the sport he’ll pay more attention and soon you’ll have a lil baseball star.

The coach is right it is normal. Do not worry let the coach handle it and your son will be ok. I know you might not think so during practice but your son will get something out of practice. Just be patient. also you might try playing catch with him and try to work on getting him to pay attention. Hope this helps

Its normal. I’m surprised the other kids aren’t doing the same, because when I go to my son’s basketball games and track meets the coaches are doing a lot of redirecting. I think as he gets older he will calm down more and either get serious or tell you that he doesn’t want to do it anymore. Just let him get out there and have fun. I get so tired of seeing the drill sergeant parents, they make the kids not enjoy it.

Most kids at this age will goof off some, my son is 8 he has been playing base ball since he was 4 years old. He is a wonderful player and enjoys it a lot. he will goof off but when it comes down to it he is all over the ball. a lot of it has to do with the position the kids are playing if they are in the out field they get bored real quick most balls don’t make it that far.
You know when a kid is not enjoying a sport when they don’t want to go, they don’t try, and ask to sit the bench. I see this all the time. it is sad. as long as your son is happy about heading out to practice and trying hard he is enjoying him self.
as far as trying to control his goofing off, I pull Mike off to the side and tell him that he he wants to play ball then he better straighten up or he will be heading home. I only had to take him home once and now all I have to do is yell out his name he straightens up real quick.
but Mike pretty much lives for sports. He does basketball and football also.
goofing off usually ends about the time the poor kid gets cracked in the head with a ball. Mike got it twice before he learned when your in the infield you don’t talk to your friend on base. He will catch on, it is just gonna take some time

normal. Don’t stress. As long as he pays attention when it is his turn and not letting the team down he is fine
